Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Today, I want to share with you this easy homemade dog treat recipe for peanut butter flavor cookie (you can eat it too, as I only use human-grade ingredients). It's no secret that dog loves peanut butter. Let's make healthy peanut butter treats that dogs love.
Why Make Your Own Peanut Butter Dog Treats?
Rambo has been on a raw diet since he was two years old. I try to avoid corn, grain, and rice in his diet. Although he doesn't have any allergies, I try to be mindful of the food he consumes because I think it's important for dogs to have a species-appropriate diet.
I usually opt for single-ingredient treats. I don't like to buy Rambo any store bought dog cookies as they are often loaded with corn, wheat flour, and other undesirable additives. That's why I've decided to start making my own homemade dog treats for Rambo, so I have complete control of the ingredients.
To make this 3 ingredient peanut butter dog treats, you need:
Oat Flour: You can buy oat flour from the store, but if you prefer, you can make your own oat flour from rolled oats. In this recipe, we're using rolled oats from One Degree Organic Foods to create our oat flour, serving as the base for our peanut butter cookies. Note: Many dog treat recipes call for whole wheat flour, but we've opted for oat flour as it aligns better with a species-appropriate diet.
Natural Peanut Butter: Make sure you read the label carefully when selecting peanut butter for your dogs. The peanut butter must be xylitol-free. Xylitol is toxic for dogs. Make sure it is not listed on the ingredient label. The one I'm using is from CB's Nuts Organic. What I love about this creamy peanut butter is only one ingredient—no added sugar or other additives.
Eggs: Eggs provide essential nutrients and act as a binding agent in this recipe.
Optional: Honey: If you'd like to add a touch of natural sweetness, you can include honey as an optional ingredient.
Now, let's walk through how to combine these three ingredients to make this delicious and healthy cookie for your dog.
Ingredients:
2 large eggs
3 tablespoons natural peanut butter
Optional: 2 tablespoons honey
Makes about 20 biscuits
Instructions:
Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it's ready for baking.
Homemade Oat Flour: If you're making your own oat flour, place the oats in a food processor and blend them until they form a fine flour. This will serve as the base for your cookies.
Mixing: In a large mixing bowl, combine the oat flour, eggs, peanut butter, and optional honey. Stir the ingredients until they form a consistent dough.
Baking: Use a dog bone cookie baking sheet from Nordic Ware for a fun shape. Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto the baking sheet, shaping them into the desired cookie size for your canine companion.
Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 15 minutes or until the cookies turn a beautiful golden hue. Keep a close eye on them to ensure they don't overbake.
Cooling: Once they're done baking, remove the cookies from the oven and set them aside to cool. Ensure they have cooled completely before serving.
Storage: To keep these homemade peanut butter dog cookies fresh, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This will maintain their flavor and quality.
